As well as providing market-leading machine guards, we also supply and install related electrical items such as guard interlocks, light guards, key exchange systems, laser area scanners, pressure-sensitive mats and pressure-sensitive strips. These can be specified by the customer or end user, or we can make recommendations based on a risk assessment and the end user’s requirements.
Where appropriate we supply machine guards with interlocks preinstalled, ready to be connected to the machine’s safety-related control system by the customer, end user or their contractor. Increasingly, however, customers are utilising our electrical integration service alongside our guard installation service.
Control system design and modification
For customers working on the design for a new machine, we can take full responsibility for the safety-related control system. We ensure the controls comply with relevant harmonised standards in order that the machine or assembly of machines can, as a whole, be CE marked to the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC.
On the other hand, if an existing machine is being modified or upgraded, we design a new safety-related control system to replace the outdated one, or we adapt the existing controls to take account of new safety devices such as guard switches or safety light curtains.
Compliance with standards and regulations
When we take responsibility for electrical integration and/or modifications to safety-related control systems, all work is completed in accordance with relevant machinery safety standards and regulations. For example:
- electrical installations on machinery comply with BS EN 60204-1 (IEC 60204-1)
- functional safety aspects comply with either BS EN ISO 13849-1 or BS EN 62061 (IEC 62061)
- members of our electrical installation team are certified to the current 18th Edition IEE Wiring Regulations
While it is essential that electrical installations comply with applicable standards and regulations, it is also important that the electrical components and system as a whole will operate reliably to give a long, trouble-free lifetime. This is where our experience across many different industries is invaluable. Our designers, electricians and fitters understand the needs of industries as diverse as automotive, aerospace, papermaking, steel, and food and pharmaceuticals. We design the safety-related control system and its installation on the machine, specify suitable components, and pay careful attention to the details during the installation to ensure the end result is truly fit for purpose.
When we undertake electrical installations on a customer’s site, we always conduct a risk assessment and prepare a method statement prior to starting work. Copies of these can be provided on request.
