Procter Machine Guarding is a leading supplier of guards, enclosures and covers for manufacturing machines. OEMs (original equipment manufacturers) find that outsourcing this aspect of the work enables them to focus on their core competences and leave the design, manufacture and installation of sheet metal guards and polycarbonate enclosures to Procter’s machinery guarding experts.

We currently provide this service to a number of OEMs in the UK and overseas. For some we manufacture to the customer’s designs by importing their CAD files; other OEMs entrust our design engineers with the conceptual and detailed design, and we can work with the customer’s appointed industrial designers to achieve the desired aesthetic. Likewise, a number of OEMs contract us to install the guards, enclosures or covers on the near-complete machines at their factories, whereas others prefer to undertake the installation themselves. In all cases we trial-assemble the components at our factory prior to despatch to ensure that everything fits together and will be ‘right first time’ for the customer.

Guarding, enclosures and covers for all types of manufacturing machine

Typical machines for which we can provide guarding, enclosures and covers include CNC machining centres, CNC and manual milling machines, turning centres and lathes, vertical boring machines, drilling machines, grinding machines, cutting machines (laser, plasma, water jet and oxy-fuel), punching machines, large-format digital printers and 3D printers (sometimes referred to as rapid prototyping (RP), rapid manufacturing (RM) and additive manufacturing (AM) machines). In addition, we serve manufacturers of test rigs, inspection systems and assembly cells and assembly lines.

Because of our flexible manufacturing processes, we can cater for any batch size, from one to hundreds.

Our immense experience in this specialist field enables us to achieve the optimum design for safety, productivity, ease of maintenance and aesthetics. OEM guards, enclosures and covers are usually manufactured from sheet steel with polycarbonate or reinforced glass viewing panels. Steel components are finished in a tough polyester powder coating to provide an excellent aesthetic as well as protection from swarf, cutting fluids and other substances.

Safe access to machines is vital for efficient loading and unloading, set-ups, operation, cleaning and maintenance. Our design engineers are adept at creating means of access that meet all the requirements, whether the need is for doors – which might be hinged, sliding (on straight or curved tracks), rise-and-fall or powered roller types – or lift-off or hinged access panels. Safety light curtains can be installed where there is a need for rapid, unimpeded access provided there is no risk from ejected particles or emissions of hazardous substances. Appropriate safety measures are applied to panels and doors, which might range from captive fasteners for panels that are seldom removed, through to high-integrity interlocks for doors that are opened frequently.

Additional features

If a machine or process is predicted to be particularly noisy, sound attenuation can be integrated within the enclosure design to reduce noise emissions and ensure the machine meets the appropriate legal requirements.

Other features that can be integrated into an OEM machine guard, enclosure or cover include coolant and swarf handling systems, dust and fume extraction, and ergonomic control panels or consoles.

In-house manufacturing​

Sheet metal components are processed using our own state-of-the-art CNC punch press and press brake, and we also have in-house welding and powder coating. This means that we maintain control over quality and lead times for the entire production process, as well as having the flexibility to ensure we deliver on time and, when necessary, meet customers’ urgent requirements.

Compliance with standards

​Our design engineers are knowledgeable and experienced in the application of relevant machinery safety standards. We work closely with customers to ensure that machine guards comply with the relevant standards and will enable the customer to CE mark the overall machine in compliance with the Machinery Directive.

Our ISO 9001 Quality Management System covers the design, manufacture and installation of machine guards.

Installation of machine guards, enclosures and covers

As with all of the modular and bespoke machine guards designed and manufactured by Procter Machine Guarding, we offer an installation service for OEM machine guards, enclosures and covers. We have our own team of highly trained and very experienced fitters, and can carry out installations to fit in with customers’ production schedules.
