Fully enclosed guards for a CNC and Manual Webster and Bennett vertical borer, manufactured and installed by Procter Machine Guarding

Guards for Webster and Bennett vertical boring machines are designed, manufactured and installed by Procter Machine Guarding, the UK's leading specialist supplier of machine safeguards.  Tailored to fit each individual machine, the guards use standardised design concepts so that they are quick and economical to produce, as well as being proven on dozens of W&B vertical borers already.

As well as meeting the requirements stipulated in BS EN 953 and BS EN 13128, Safety of machine tools - Milling machines (including boring machines), the Webster & Bennett guards take account of ergonomics.  They also enable machine owners and suppliers to comply with PUWER 98 (the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998) and suppliers retrofitting NC or CNC controls may well need to comply with the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC.

Every Webster & Bennett vertical boring machine is slightly different, so Procter Machine Guarding surveys each one to ensure that the new guards fit 'right first time'.  Different configurations of guarding are necessary to suit manual machines and those with NC/CNC controls.  In both cases machines with table sizes of 36, 48, 60 and 72 inches can be guarded.

Manual Webster and Bennett machines require close-fitting guards such that the controls can still be reached and process visibility is maintained.  These guards feature a combination of interlocked doors for loading fixtures and parts, hinged or rise-and-fall for changing tooling, and lower hinged door sections for swarf removal.  If the machine is run with coolant, then internal coolant trays can also be incorporated.

NC/CNC machines are fully enclosed, with solenoid-interlocked access doors that may be sliding or hinged, and removable lower cloaking panels and upper maintenance panels.  An automatic internal tool changer door is incorporated, and swarf conveyors can be accommodated within the enclosure.

In all cases, customers can specify the finish and the material used for the viewing windows (polycarbonate or laminated glass), the type of guard interlocks, and numerous other details.

Customers benefit from the comprehensive service provided by Procter Machine Guarding.  Furthermore, sourcing from a single supplier with an excellent track record ensures cost-effectiveness and low risk.  If customers need assistance with the initial risk assessment, Procter Machine Guarding offers a free Risk Assessment Calculator or can put customers in contact with independent machinery safety consultants.

As well as providing guards for Webster and Bennett vertical borers, Procter Machine Guarding can also retrofit and upgrade guards on similar machine tools from VBM manufacturers such as Schiess and Toshulin.
